Go to a Periodontist for Dental Implants

Posted on: October 16, 2017

Dental ImplantsDental implants are the most durable way to replace missing teeth that allow for patients to feel like they have all of their natural teeth. Dental implants are durable enough to allow patients to bite down without the fear of damaging teeth. When combining this fact with the natural appearance, dental implants are incredibly popular. Once you decide to get dental implants, it is time to visit a periodontist.

Placing dental implants

The actual implant is a small titanium post that we insert under the gums and secure to the jawbone. Since the body treats titanium like it treats natural matter, it will begin to deposit bone around the post in a process known as osseointegration and it can take a couple of months. Once complete, the implant will be as secure as a natural root. Dental implants allow for us to secure an abutment to the implant at the surface of the gum and then secure a new tooth or dental crown.

Since we place the actual implant during oral surgery, it is important to visit a dentist who has the most experience performing these types of surgical procedures.

The right level of experience

A periodontist has expertise beyond that of a traditional dentist in dealing with issues pertaining to the health of the gums and jawbone. Thus, a periodontist is better-suited for placing the dental implant than a general dentist. While a general dentist may only perform this procedure occasionally, the general dentist will spend the majority of time on preventative care.

Dentistry is incredibly specific and the more experience a dentist has in a particular type of treatment, the more likely the procedure will go according to plan without any complications. Since a periodontist spends more time placing dental implants and understands the complexity of the jawbone and gums, they are truly the best provider for anyone who is ready to make the decision to replace their missing teeth.

Getting started

When ready to start the process, the first step is to schedule a consultation. During this initial visit, we will conduct an examination and take X-rays. This is necessary for determining if there is enough jawbone density to support the placement of a dental implant. If not, we may need to conduct an additional procedure first. This consultation is the right time to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the treatment process.

After scheduling the appointment for dental implants, it will be important to plan ahead. Do not go to work that day and prepare for sedation during the procedure. Afterward, it is wise to have someone drive you home. It will take a few days for the gums to heal and to begin feeling normal. During that time, there will be specific care instructions that must be followed so that everything can heal appropriately. A follow-up appointment will then be necessary for finishing the process and attaching the new tooth.
